* * *
And here we are … almost on the half of our journey. This time a few words and a bunch of photos about tea plantations around Nuwara Eliya, night walk to the top of Adam’s peak and ascend to Little Adam’s peak. Here we go …

DAY 7 – NUWARA ELIYA PLANTAŽE ČAJA – TEA PLANTATIONS

Zajtrk stane 400 rupij (dobra 2 EUR).
* * *
For breakfast I have some fruits and chlidren get toast with butter – their favourite Sri Lankan breakfast :). We pay 400 rupees (a bit over 2 EUR) for it.

* * *
When we finish with breakfast, there is tuk tuk already waiting for us outside the hotel. We arranged the tour yesterday. We will visit tea plantations and some other nice sights around Nuwara Eliya. We drive around the beautiful landscapes and the weather is just perfect. 5 hours long tour costs us 2500 rupees (16 EUR).

* * *
Our first stop is at Mackwoods tea plantations, which is partially owned by prince Charles. The factory is actually quite turistical, but the nice tour guide shows and explains to us how tea is made. If you are courious … all tea (black, green and white) is produced from the same plant. They cut the bushes every 5 years. With cutting, they prevent the tea plants to grow too high (if they were not cut, they would grow up to 9 meters). Every 50 years they have to dig old plants out and put in the new ones …

Takole izgleda luksuzno opremljena trgovina s čaji poleg tovarne …
* * *
This is how luxurious tea store looks. It is located beside the factory …

… in tako izgleda tovarna od znotraj.
* * *
… and that’s how the factory looks inside.

* * *
After we finish the tour around the factory we sit down on a nice terrace beside the store were they serve us great tea – for free.

* * *
After the “tea party” we take a short walk around beautiful tea plantations. We meet a few workers but they are so annoying with begging for money that we literally run away from them. Our guide warned us not to give them money …

* * *
After tea plantations visit we continue to a cliff from where you can see this …

Yeah right … to si zapomnite … V glavnem do tega 300 metrov oddaljenega slapa smo hodili dobre pol ure :P.
* * *
From here we continue our tour towards local waterfall which is 300m distant from the road (this was our guides words) :). Yeah right … remember this … Locals do not know the difference between 300 meters and 1 kilometer hahahaha. Disaster … and this was happening on daily basis :). Well .. for those 300 meters we needed more than half an hour :P.

Ta pod čez vodo seveda ni potekala brez padcev :).
* * *
But it was all worth it … nice view at the waterfall from another hill and on our way back, we stopped just below the waterfall. We needed to climb a bit and cross some water stream. This crossing of course did not go without accidents :). One kid fell into the water one way and the other on the way back hahahahah

Na poti nazaj v mesto nam zmanjka bencina :). Medtem, ko čakamo, da nam vodičev prijatelj prinese flašo bencina, naredim nekaj lepih portretov …
* * *
On the way back we ran out of gas. While we wait for guides friend to bring us a bottle of gasoline I make a few portraits …

Pogled na Nuwara Eliyo iz sosednjega griča …
* * *
Sight of Nuwara Eliya from the neighboring hill …

Glede na stil življenja na Šri Lanki ja ful zanimivo koliko takih draguljarn smo videli …
* * *
It is interesting how many jeweleries we saw, depending on the style of life in Sri Lanka …

* * *
Here we found out that we did not do our homework with planning the trip. We planned to go to Adams Peak from Nuwara Eliya, but we were far, far away from the mountain :/. So … when you plan your trip, pay attention where you are going so you won’t have to travel all around the country :). In the afternoon we start more than 3 hours train ride BACK to Hatton where the Adams Peak really is. And here the most difficult two days of our jurney begins …

Še ena huda fotka postaje v Nanu Oyi 🙂
* * *
Anotrher cool photo of a Nanu Oya train station 🙂

* * *
It starts to rain really hard and we are sooo happy that we have a roof over our heads … we would be soaking wet in a few seconds otherwise :).

Svinjarija gre seveda na štreko … :).
* * *
Waist ends up on the track of course … :).

* * *
Our four legged friend which accompanied us for whole time we were waiting for a train :). Of course it was worth it … probably he did not eat that much his whole life :).

Nekaj fotografij nastalih med čakanjem vlaka :).
* * *
Some photos taken during our time spent waiting for a train 🙂

* * *
We go to the nearest store for some food with kids … bananas and horribly greasy roties (which we fed to the dog because they were uneatable – we could drain them on the other hand hahahaha). Kids were the main attraction as everywhere they showed up :). They earned some candy with just being nice and say “hello”. This kind saleswoman wanted to photograph with them :).

* * *
How you make some kids at the train station laugh? You fell on slippery tracks :P. But it was worth it … I love this photo hahahah

Otroci so se hitro spoprijateljili 🙂
* * *
The children quickly became friends 🙂

Končno vlak … in to TAPRAV VLAK!!! Razpadel, zarjavel … tisti pravi s katerim smo se želeli peljati 🙂
* * *
Finnaly the train arrives … and this is the train we wanted!!!! Rusty, rotten, ugly … 🙂

Prijazen in zgovoren mladenič s katerim smo še vedno v stikih preko Facebooka 🙂
* * *
We’ve met this young man on a train station and he was our company on the train also. Nice and talkative guy with which we are still in contact on Facebook 🙂

Nekaj fotografij naših sopotnikov. Še enkrat … če potujete z vlakom morate NUJNO!!!! potovati v tretjem razredu!!!
* * *
Few clicks of our local fellow travelers. Again … trust me … if you travel by train you HAVE TO travel in 3rd class!!!!!! Not because of lower price (it is just a bit lower than first class), but because of the experience! It is something completly different to travel with locals in 3rd class than with bunch of Chinese people, air condition and LCD TV in first class ;).

* * *
This boy joind Gal and Lan at watching cartoon … he did not blink with an eye all the time :). I wonder how many cartoons he saw in his life …

Nočitev brez zajtrka nas stane skoraj 6000 rupij (36 EUR) … grozljivka :). Ampak žal je pred nami prišla ogromna skupina ljudi, ki so prišli meditirat in so bili vsi cenejši hoteli in guest housei zasedeni … torej, v sili hudič muhe žre pravijo :).
* * *
Here we are in the Adams Peak village. From Hatton train station to here is approx. 1 hour drive. Because we were too late for a bus (last one leaves at 9 pm) we were forced to take a tuk tuk which costs us 1500 rupees (10 EUR). I have to admit that this was the most unpleaseant ride of all. In small tuk tuk there were 4 people (there is space for only two persons) and all of our luggage :). And the road was in such bad condition that the ride felt like an earthquake :/. But in the end we travel for adventures and this was definetly one of them :). And this is our room … the most expensive room on our trip around Sri Lanka … 6000 rupees (36 EUR) just for one night without breakfast … terrible :). But unfortunately all rooms were booked by a large group of meditators …

Torej … čez 3 ure se prične najbolj nora dogodivščina v našem življenju … woooohhoooooooo :).
* * *
Since we are already late, we go to bed quickly because we have only 3 hours left before we start our night jurney to the top of Adam’s peak. 7000 stairs in dark awaits us and we only have two headlights to light our way. So … in three hours the craziest adventure of our lives begins … woooohoooooooo 🙂

DAY 8 – ADAMS PEAK – ELLA

* * *
And this is how our ascend begins … at 1 AM we walk on this poorly marked trail and we hope that we are going the right direction 🙂

* * *
We meet this huge snail on the way … it is the size of a man’s palm …

* * *
Trip to Adam’s peak is actually free … but at 1 AM there is a monk sitting along the way (we were first by the way 🙂 ) and selling his blessings for quite a lot of money :). If you take a look at his “guest book” you can see that tourists are giving him from 2000 to 5000 rupees (17-25 eur). To tell you the truth … it is not a problem to give him some money, but 2000 rupees is a bit too much. But since we do not want to look like cheap punks … we pay 🙂

Ena skupinska med potjo :). Takole smo bili opremljeni … dve bogi svetilki s katerimi smo si osvetljevali pot. K sreči smo na poti srečali 2 prijazna Poljaka, ki sta nam posodila eno svojih svetilk, da smo videli vsaj 3 korake pred seboj :). Ko je turistična sezona, je pot osvetljena … ampak nam je bilo tole še bolj zanimivo … neka posebna izkušnja 🙂
* * *
A group photo :). This is our equipement … two small flashlights. Luckily we’ve met two nice tourists from Poland who lend us one of therir flashligts so we could see at least 3 steps ahead of us :). During tourist season the way is lit with electric lamps … but we actually preffered this … it was a really great experience 🙂

Kralj!
* * *
Guy at the top of Adam’s peak is selling the most disgusting tea ever. But since he is the only one, he is THE MAN and the bussines is going GREAT. Price of this slush is 100 rupees hahahahahaha. Normal price for 876532452387462 times better tea is about 20 rupees :).

WOOOOHOOOOOOOOO. Noro … res noro!!!! … in vredno vsake stopnice :). Zdaj pa uživajte v razgledu 😉
* * *
After 1,5 hour of waiting and freezing (yes it is freezing on the top … and windy, so you should take a blanket or 6 with you 🙂 ) we finally see the view for which we were struggling all the way to the top …. WOOOOHOOOOOO. The view was insanely gorgeous … and worth every step :). And now … just enjoy 🙂

Tole so stopnice tik pod vrhom.
* * *
This are stairs just below the top. Unfortunately in main tourist season Adam’s peak is so crowded that many tourist can not even reach the top and then can’t see this gorgeous sunrise in all his glory …

Ja … razgled je bil res lep 🙂
* * *
Ouyeah …. the wiev was really spectacular 🙂

Tale dva psa sta nas spremljala skoraj celo pot do vrha.
* * *
Those two dogs accompanied us all the way up. On the top they dissapeared somewhere, but they found us again on our way down 🙂 They deserved some food 😛

Vrhunsko 🙂
* * *
Yes, we were there on the top. On the peak that is hiding in the fog. Damn … i seriously doubt that I would make it to the top if the sun was up. I think all I would do was stare in the sky and think how far is it :). But in the night time it was great … you walk, walk … an walk … and you walk … and suddenly there are only 345 more steps to the top 🙂 Excellent 🙂

Mojstri marketinga 🙂
* * *
Masters of marketing 🙂

* * *
Well … for thise two spots on othe forehead (me and Urša also got one), we payed 1000 rupees (cca. 7 eur). It’s a bit of a problemif you can not say no at the right time :). I am pretty sure that the guy who sold us this “blessing” is still laughing at us hahahahahah

* * *
A few photos of the village under Adams peak … nothing special 🙂

* * *
We caught the bus by seconds – literaly. After really hard night we didn’t have 5 minutes to sit down and rest a bit. Infornt of us there was almost 2 hour wide in crowded bus (I was hanging out the doors for 1/2 hour with 100 liters backpack on my shoulders) …

In gremo dalje … tokrat z vlakom. Med čakanjem se lahko vsaj malo usedemo :). Zdaj pa … Ella prihajamooooo 🙂
* * *
And now we are waiting for the train … Ella here we comeeee 🙂

* * *
On the train, after 9 hours of stairs and almost 2 hours bus ride, Lan runs out of energy 🙂 … on the dirty floor, between the legs of group of French backpackers …

* * *
It is so cool to photograph people in Sri Lanka. They are really interesting and always ready for action 🙂

* * *
On the way from Hatton to Ella, while kids are sleeping on the floor on the crowded train, we are still struggling and half-sleeping while standing hahahaha. Here are some clicks of a beautiful country …

Pa smo v Elli. Prenočišče najdemo kar takoj … še dobro nismo stopili z vlaka, že nas napade domačin in nam začne ponujati svoj guesthouse.
Če boste v Elli lahko definitvno priporočimo “THE BLUE VIEW INN – Rawana homestay”.
* * *
And here we are in Ella. We find a place to stay in a few seconds … in a moment we step of the train a local guy “attacks” us, offering the best room in the world. Since we were nearly dead and the room was on our budget (3000 rupees – 20 eur) we go with him to take a look at this great room in the city center :). Well, it wan not exactly in the center (5 minutes walk away) but it was even better than described … big, bright, CLEAN and with cheap beer and AC :).
If you are in Ella we can definetly reccomend “THE BLUE VIEW INN – Rawana homestay”. As we said before, this homestay is really nice and the owner is the best! He also has a restaurant in the centre with great food!!! Homestay is located about 500m away from train station and the same distance from center of the town.

Edina dobra stvar v Elli je Little Adams peak (več o tem malo niže).
* * *
This is centre of Ella … actually, here everything is centre, because this shitty village comprises 4 streets at most. Our opinion is that visiting Ella was a complete waist of time and money :/. But there is one good thing there … Little Adams peak, which you really should visit.

* * *
Seriously … food was expensive like hell – the cheapest meal was about 1000 rupees (7 eur WTF!), which is about 6 times more expensive than the cheapest meal in Nuwara Eliya a few days ago. But it is true that here in Ella, the meal was served on fancy dinner service instead on a plastic plate wrapped in plastic bag …

DAY 9 – ELLA – LITTLE ADAMS PEAK – UDAWALAWE

Evo … to je Ella … 4 ulice in 8 hiš hahahah …
* * *
That’s it … this is Ella … 4 streets and 8 houses …

… in hvala bogu Little Adams peakom!!!
* * *
… and thankfully Little Adams peak!! Because if there were no Little Adams peak, that “town” would be a disaster :). So the path to Little Adams peak starts about 10 minutes walk out of the center. Than you have to walk about 45 minutes to the top. Or much longer … it depends of how many times you stop to take photos and enjoy the amazing views …

* * *
Wooohoooo we conquered another peak. To tell you the truth that small hill was quite a challenge, because a day before we climbed the big Adams peak. You have to admitt, we look gorgeous hahahahhaha

In še razgled brez nas, ki ga kvarimo na prejšnji fotografiji 🙂
* * *
And the amazing view without us spoiling it, like on previous photo 🙂

* * *
This is jack fruit. It looks a lot like durian, but it is smaller and it doesn’t smell so bader eating it I was cleaning my hands with coconut oil for three day and they still smelled like shit hahahahah … but it is delicious (not for everyone ofcourse).

* * *
When you are travelling around Sri Lanka, you soon find out that all you can eat are pancakes made in 1001 variations and fried noodles with rice for Chinese tourists. So … for three weeks we ate kottu rotti (on the picture). So if you are planning a trip to Sri Lanka, do not expect some delicious diverse food, because you can be dissapointed like I was :/.

* * *
About 10 minutes drive from Ella you can find this watterfall. Nothing to die for … but if you have a 2 hours to spare go and take a look. And there was a guy that sold us a few stones from the watterfal … and for eruos. He said that he is collecting them … really??? … and waht do you think that I am doing with them hahahahahhahahahaha

In baje to v teh krajih ni nič nenavadnega … če je model lačen gre pač jest …
* * *
Those two photos aren’t special. Special is the situation in which they were taken :). We are on the bus to Udawalawe (Udawalawe national park is our next destination) and the driver suddenly stops the bus and goes in to the restaurat … to eat!!! Ok … I can understand that you can not drive if you are hungry :). I heard that this is a common thing in Sri Lanka …

Še nekaj fotk s poti do Udawalawa …
* * *
Few more clicks I took on our way from Ella to Udawalawe …

This is where we spent the night in Udawalawe. One of two guesthouses where we payed more than 3000 rupees (4600 rupees – about 36 eur). We read on booking so many good words about the national park tour guide from this cottage, that we had to have him :). Owners (old people) do not speak english, so if you order dinner they can bring you a shovel, but their kindness is beyond words :). The national park tour guide is also very cool and he knows so much about animals which live in the park. But more about our safari next time.
Guesthouse is named Walawa Cottage (click) and the guide is one and only Leel Kumara (click).
